He comes from Zanzibar where his father, Issa Matona, was a renowned musician, singing and playing kidumbak and taarab. Matona's music career began when he joined his father's group as a percussionist in Dar es Salaam in the late 1980's. In the mid 1990's he joined the oldest taarab orchestra in Zanzibar, Nadi Ikhwan Safaa (Malindi Taarab).
